Friday Night Lights for Progress Developments Cup

The Swans District Football Development Council (SDFDC) has capped off another successful AFL 9s Progress Developments Cup. The revolutionary competition, which is played under lights at Baskerville Reserve, is proudly supported by SDFDC Principal Partner, Progress Developments. The Progress Developments Cup saw 10 weeks of spirited competition from 120 kids sourced from the broad scope of the SDFDC including Chittering, High Wycombe, Kalamunda, Mundaring, Swan View and Upper Swan.

The Progress Developments Cup is a round-robin style competition composed of sides in the Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Swans District Junior Competitions. The exciting competition provided the future stars of the Swan Districts Football Club with the chance to continue playing football long after the final siren has sounded on the Swans District Junior Competition. AFL 9s is a modified version of junior community football composed of 9 players per side and three distinct zones which is used to educate players about playing in different positions.

The style of play featured in AFL 9s promotes equitable participation with each player rotated through defence, midfield and up forward to maximise participation. AFL 9s provides players aged 9 to 12 with the best of both worlds, including the ability to win more of the ball, whilst still maintaining the competitive edge of a junior community match. The competition also provided players and spectators alike with an exciting spectacle with frequent scoring a notable feature. The SDFDC together with Progress Developments saw an opportunity to provide a structured football competition to junior community players beyond the season proper, subsequently developing the AFL 9s Progress Developments Cup.

With the competition being played in the heart of the Swan Valley, it provides the SDFDC with the perfect opportunity to promote the work of Progress Developments and its role in shaping a new way of living in the Swan Valley. Thanks to the success of Enclave at St Leonards and St Leonards Private Estate, the SDFDC sees Caversham, Dayton and West Swan as suburbs of exciting growth potential. With house and land packages selling like hotcakes at Suffolk Park Private Estate, the SDFDC is striving to enrich the development of existing programs such as the Progress Developments Cup and enhance the pathways provided to current and potential junior community players.
