Kindergarten Kids Learn The Basics
Swans District coupled with principal partner Progress Developments are pioneering a program of a different kind with Kindergarten students at Caversham Primary School being given the chance to develop basic AFL skills before embarking on Auskick. The distinctive program is designed to develop the motor skills, attention span, independence and health and wellbeing of Kindergartners prior to donning their first Auskick jumper. Swans Footy Fundamentals has also been developed to promote AFL to kids of culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds and develop subsequent linkages between these communities and Caversham Suns Junior Football Club.
Caversham Suns JFC and Caversham PS are key planks in the vision of Swans District and Progress Developments to provide the growing Multicultural population with greater exposure to junior community football pathways. Swans Footy Fundamentals, which is designed to suit kids aged 18 months to 4 years, is primarily focused on developing the catching, crawling and running capabilities of Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students instead of the more specialised skills of handballing, kicking and marking.
Whilst providing an excellent entrée to Auskick it also enhances coordination, concentration and health in a relaxed setting. The 30 minute sessions, which were developed to ensure maximum participation, were highlighted by balancing beams, hula hoops and step ladders. But, the inclusion of such equipment didn’t distract from the primary goal of educating participants how to catch and kick with the use of specialised AFL equipment such as soft footballs.
Thanks to the support of Progress Developments, Swans District staff have been able to serve the dual purpose of developing potential Auskickers and supporters at Kindergarten and Pre-Primary School level. Swans District and Progress Developments now hope to see the Year 1 and 2 Swans Footy Fundamentals participants become part of the newly minted Caversham Suns JFC Auskick Centre in 2015. The program, which completed its successful pilot at Caversham Primary School, is now looking to expand into the suburbs of Aveley, Bassendean and Kalamunda to provide Aveley JFC, Bassendean JFC and Kalamunda JFC with a distinct Auskick pathway between primary school and junior community football.
